Tygerberg have claimed their second Villager Schools Sevens title in two years after they beat SACS High School, 37 – 12, in a one sided affair, proving their prowess on the local sevens circuit.

Tygerberg’s path to the final was paved with one convincing victory after another, their ascent beginning with their first round victory over the American International School where they finished off a with a resounding 64 – 0 victory.  Thereafter they beat Bergvliet A, 46 – 5 in the second round and the Western Cape Sports School 24 – 0 in the quarter final setting up a potential humdinger of a semi final against Bishops. The hype was soon quelled as Tygerberg silenced the Bishops faithful with an assertive 21 – 7 victory after which they were to meet SACS High School A in the final.

SACS’s journey to the final was not as easy as Tygerbergs and were made to sweat in numerous games, but their tenacity ensured they finished off a very good Rondebosch A side in the last minute of their semi final clash, 24 – 20 after trailing by one point leading up to the final movement of the game. SACS began their tournament account beating JAG Malibu 19 – 0 in the first round and Plumstead 52 – 0 in the second round. Fish Hoek proved to be worthy quarter final opponents pushing SACS all the way, but still went away empty handed losing 19 – 5.

In the Plate competition Tygerberg HS B team were looking to make it two in a row like their A team counterparts, making the final against a worthy Wynberg side that may not have played to its full potential on the day in the cup competition. Tygerberg were looking set to clinch their second title but for a last grasp Wynberg try in the corner that set up a sudden death round where the first team to score would win the title. Wynberg started strongly and came away with the spoils breaking the Tygerberg line seemingly at ease to score under the poles.

The 45th Villager 7s was a great success for all spectators and players, the atmosphere was filled with an unbelievable vibe, especially once up and coming DJ Chris Taylor began his set on the A field.

The Villager 7s organisers would like to thank all our loyal sponsors (See here) for their support as well as to all players that participated and all the supporters that attend the games. We look forward to hosting you next year at Brookside, the home of the Dirty Whites.
